Welcome to the 15th International Conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional Countries
Distinguished guests, esteemed scholars, and dear friends,
It is my greatest honor and delight to warmly welcome everyone on behalf of Kunming Medical University (KMU). As we gather together for the 15th International Conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional (GMS) Countries, which will take place in Kunming from October 23rd to 26th, 2025, I am thrilled to be part of this significant event with all of you.
This conference, themed "Building a Regional Health Community: Challenges and Innovations in Public Health," embodies our shared dedication to advancing public health in GMS and beyond. Over the past decade, the GMS Public Health Academic Network, co-founded by 24 universities from the six countries, has been instrumental in promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing in public health. This year marks the third time that KMU has had the privilege of hosting this significant event, reflecting our unwavering commitment to regional public health development.
In today's interconnected world, the field of public health faces unprecedented challenges. Emerging infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, health inequities, and the impact of climate change on health call for collective action and innovative solutions. At the same time, advancements in digital health technologies, vaccine development, nanotechnology, green infrastructure, big data analytics, and cross-disciplinary approaches offer promising opportunities. These innovations enable remote consultations, targeted interventions, and help bridge gaps in healthcare access. By focusing on prevention and early intervention, we can optimize resource allocation and enhance public health management. This conference serves as a vital platform for experts, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange insights, experiences, and best practices in addressing these pressing issues.
Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, occupies a unique geographical and cultural position as a gateway to Southeast Asia. Its rich biodiversity, ethnic diversity, and strategic location make it an ideal setting for discussions on regional health cooperation. KMU, with its robust foundation in medical education and research, remains steadfast in its mission to contribute to global health through international collaboration and academic exchange.
We sincerely hope that this conference will deepen our understanding of current public health challenges while inspiring collaborative initiatives and innovative strategies to build healthier communities across the GMS and beyond. On behalf of all organizers, I look forward to engaging discussions, meaningful connections, and significant progress in our shared journey toward improved public health outcomes.
Once again, welcome to Kunming, and may your time here be both professionally fulfilling and personally enjoyable.
Thank you!
The GMS Public Health Academic Network was established in 2012 in Kunming, China. The network brings together public health academic institutions from all 6 GMS countries namely Thailand, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Cambodia, and China.
The network strives to achieve the highest possible level of health for all people in the GMS while promoting health equity throughout the region. The network addresses major public health challenges by conducting activities focused on education, scientific research, and policy advocacy.
Serving as a vital link, the network strengthens collaboration and partnerships among public health institutions in the GMS and fosters cooperative efforts among existing networks, policymakers, and researchers interested in health policy and research. Additionally, it provides a platform for graduate students and young academic staff to share and exchange scientific findings and professional experiences.
As a cornerstone of regional health collaboration, the network continues to bridge knowledge gaps and cultivate a shared vision for equitable health development.
One of the key activities of the GMS Public Health Academic Network is the organization of annual international conferences for its members and the public. These conferences aim to foster collaboration and facilitate knowledge exchange among institutions. They also provide valuable opportunities for the Deans of the member institutions to meet in person and develop future collaboration plans.
Over the past decade, a total of 14 conferences have been successfully held. This year, the theme is “Building a Regional Health Community: Challenges and Innovations in Public Health.” Notably, this marks the third time that Kunming Medical University in China has had the privilege of hosting this significant event.
